Ukraine-EU Parliamentary Club calls on Ukrainian, European MPs to intensify process of initialing association agreement | | Politics | 21-02-2012, 23:58 | 0 39 |
| The Ukraine-EU Parliamentary Club has called on deputies in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the European Parliament to intensify the process of initialing the EU-Ukraine association agreement.
Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense MP Iryna Heraschenko said at a press conference on Tuesday that a respective statement had been adopted at a meeting of the Ukraine-EU Parliamentary Club and would soon be sent to Ukrainian and European deputies, says Interfax-Ukraine.
"We are asking European and the Ukrainian government institutions to pay special attention to ensuring there is parliamentary support for the signing of an association agreement between Ukraine and the EU. We are calling on both parties to initial the draft agreement as soon as possible," she said.
Heraschenko said that the speedy initialing of the agreement was linked to the need for the Ukrainian authorities to fulfill their political commitments, as well as to the future development of the state.
"If the party itself speaks of its desire to join the EU, it must fulfill certain obligations," she said.
"Pressure from Russia on Ukraine will be strengthened after March 4 in the context of pulling Ukraine into a Eurasian alliance, which is [Russian Prime Minister Vladimir] Putin's main foreign policy project. And in order to deprive Ukrainian officials, bureaucrats and politicians of any chance to swerve from the course of European integration, we have to initial this agreement as soon as possible, preferably in February or March," Heraschenko said.
MEP Alexander Mirsky, who is also a member club of the Ukraine-EU Parliamentary Club, said that the process of initialing the agreement had stalled due to the domestic situation in Ukraine.
"But I'm an optimist. Ukraine will be in Europe, but it needs to do a lot of work at home," he said.
Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense MP Mykola Katerynchuk said that all of the priority tasks had already been outlined in the relevant documents and resolutions of the European institutions.
"The first problem is the rule of law, the second – decriminalization, the third – the amnesty [of political prisoners], and the fourth - democratic parliamentary elections," he said.
The Ukraine-EU Parliamentary Club (a group of friends of Ukraine) was established in September 2010, and the group's first meeting was held on May 24, 2011. The group includes members of various political groups and factions in the European Parliament and the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The group was created to help Ukraine join the EU as soon as possible. | | |
