|  Thousands of parents in the Torbay area have been warned that their children could have been victims of a paedophile ring that may have groomed victims on social networking sites, - “Telegraph” speaks about this.
Officers took the unusual step of writing to the parents of more than 16,000 secondary schoolchildren in south Devon to inform them that a “complex child abuse investigation is currently under way in Torbay”.
The inquiry is believed to centre on young men who had been sexually exploiting girls and some boys aged between 12 and 15.
Officers have identified 20 victims in the Torbay area but believe there could be dozens more and appealed for others to come forward. The offences ranged from sexual assault to rape, and could date back several years.
A 19-year-old man has been arrested and was being questioned on charges relating to “child exploitation”.
Detectives were trying to establish whether the victims, who were known to their abusers, were targeted through social networking sites, particularly Facebook and Bebo, or were picked up on the streets.
The children are thought to have been plied with drink and drugs before the attacks.
Children who were identified as having been abused were being supported by agencies including the police, Torbay council’s children’s services department and the NHS.
